ARTIST STATEMENT:

I am intrigued with human interactions through which vulnerability and empathy strengthen connection. The process of getting to that inner core, however, is not always easy or straight-forward.

 

The layers in this piece represent a slow revealing as more and more is uncovered, as well as the different truths that slowly rise to the surface both to me and for those around me. On the first layer, hard edges of a new diagnosis that still hasn’t become apparent on the outside show a workplace profile picture and words that require a bit of extra effort to read and absorb. Diving deeper, one notices the softer edges of acceptance and embracing my new body and reality. Finally, the serene colors of still water yield a ripple effect that is sometimes small and imperceptible and other times outwardly stormy and wavy, but always a part of me and how I show up...bring me back to the full circle to choices in each human interaction, every day.
